The 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SX was a rare, luxury-oriented muscle car package that combined the high-performance powertrain of the legendary 4-4-2 with the premium, upscale styling of the Cutlass Supreme notchback. Marketed as a ''sleeper'' performance car, it hid its massive big-block engine under a clean, flat hood without the loud racing stripes or air-induction scoops typical of the era. 1971 marked the second and final year of production for the SX package (Option Code Y-79). The 455 Rocket V8: The defining element of the SX was its standard 455 cubic-inch big-block engine (the L32 package). This was the only way to get a 455 V8 engine in a standard Cutlass Supreme coupe for the 1971 model year. Power Output: Due to industry-wide mandates lowering compression ratios to accommodate unleaded gasoline, power was decreased compared to 1970. The 1971 motor produced 250 net horsepower and massive low-end torque. Drivetrain: It came standard with a heavy-duty Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission. 4-4-2 Rear Bumper: The most telling visual clue on the exterior was the rear bumper, which featured the exact same exhaust cutouts and chrome trumpet exhaust tips found on the 4-4-2.
